website design

so i've been playing around with a website design for this talented musician. he's gonna be big. this is basically just a backgound - all the info will appear within the boxes (hence the muted colors)

more cosmo logos

i feel best about this set of potential logos. they are more simplified and cleaner than the others as of yet. i figured it was time to cut out cosmo's face cause it was looking stoops.

grunge colors

i felt like posting this little number i used for the dress of the model in the post 'inspiration' cause every time i look at it the more and more i like it which is generally not the case with art one's made.

logos

these are some concept logos that i did - i was provided with the basic piano key shape to work with and i ran with it: it's called musical chapters (i can't say anything else about it but it's gonna be cool.) the final one is the logo that is going to be used

100th post

for my 100th post i am publicly announcing the working title of my BFA project: 'concept'

i like shoes.

i realized something about myself today. i like shoes. i have various pairs but i like to buy more. in fact - i think i have bought a pair a month (and some months i buy two purr): i was thinking about a story about a kid that spends all day imagining about how amazing his life would be wearing the new shoes he mail ordered - imagining about being able to fly to space in them, fight aliens, cross enemy lines to save the USA!, beat julia childs in a cook off, beat up rachael ray, slam dunk the length of the court - and when the kids shoes finally arrive... he can do all of those things with his new pair of shoes (not because the shoes are magical or anything, but because new shoes are that cool.) i think it would be a lot of fun to work on a story like that - a lot of room for fun, and you think a big moral is coming at the end (material goods don't bring you happiness - but nay, oft times they do.) but it's not. the moral is... new shoe's rock.

i'm sure i'll expound on this idea more as i work out more specific ideas. i will definitely make a pic of the kid using his new shoes to propel himself into space!

inspiration

so i was cruising the net and i ran across this amazing portfolio - i seriously love this kinda stuff and love to think about turning this style into animation... it'd be BRILLIANT! so i figured before i could animate something like that i would have to learn to create it using photoshop and all of that fun stuff: here is my semi-attempt at mimicking it: i mostly played around but didn't save any files, this is basically the only 'composition' that i did (i bummed the model off of google images search - props to them.)

i was playing around with the placement of the 'inc' and couldn't decide which i liked better...

rocker

this is some green screen footage that i found on the internet - i have been trying to get my hands on some but it's surprisingly hard to come by on the internet for free... (i found it on a british magazine computer arts webpage) i guess most of the things that i'm teaching myself will be showcasing this rocker.

and i haven't put any music on these lately - so... i did. i know you all missed it. feel good compliments of the gorillaz

dude.

sorry i haven't posted in awhile - i've been busy living life as opposed to drawing it. i also have a couple free-lance projects that i am working on in which i can't post. you know the drill. i did this drawing while watching 'america's best dance crew' on mtv. like it love it gotta have it. and i just colored him up during some free time

oh yeah! i finished a cut of my demo reel - i'll obviously have a bunch of new stuff that i will have to incorporate in soon, but we'll get there when we get there: i'm going to figure out how to get the reel online so you can check it out. it's 3 gigs though... it may take me awhile to figure that out - till then, request one and i'll hook you up

building jump

i made these sweet buildings in photoshop and i decided that i really wanted to use them in an after effects projects. the end.

golden axe revisited

this was the very first shot that i actually worked on using after effects - it was for a student film called 'the golden axe' (now that it's no longer being worked on i would like to get something off my chest: i hate the name. 'the golden axe'... really? we couldn't do better than that? no me gusta.) anyway - it was the opening/establishing shot of the film - there were going to be some matte paintings and all sorts of nifty little artistic things with flavor that were going to make this movie cool. somewhere along the lines, the vision got lost - and therefore the movie lost momentum because it was no longer cool nor fun and blah. dead. anyway - i wanted to revisit that original shot that i could never really get down because of lack of knowledge (the first one i did, i didn't know you could animate a camera and i used position keyframes to make everything fly past the camera... it was sketch.) i feel i pretty much could go back and do that shot in about an hour as opposed to the original 10 or 11 hours i did the first time. i kinda played with the '300 effect' while crossing the bridge: the stupid little boy on the bridge is a place holder for the animated boy. also, i would probably change the timing as we approach the mountain so that it's not so fast. i sufficiently proved to myself though that i could easily do that shot if i were asked now which is nice because that means i have taught myself something. go team.

t-rex run

i wanted to mimic a paper cut-out type animation so i went on google and found this sweet picture of a t-rex and basically cut all of his extremities off and made them their own each layer and then animated the thing using the rotations/positions with each one: it was a nice little project because i learned about parenting expressions to each other... i was gonna make him shoot a giant laser beam out of his mouth but it looked really really weird - so it's just him roaring. but... without sounds...

18.6.08

baby franco

when i was in california i accompanied stephanie for a day of babysitting - there was this cute kid named franco (he fits the name perfectly): while he was bouncing around in his little door frame kid bouncer thing i made a quick doodle of him

waiters

these are some waiter designs that i was playing around with - this wasn't for anything specific, i was just bored and ran with it

sketches from may and june

these are various sketches that i did throughout may and june: i didn't really make a lot of time to draw: instead of posting tons of individual pictures, i just combined them into a composition

the original image is rather large if you want to see individual pictures better so give it a click if you want to check it out

30.5.08

travis van hoff cd covers

these are the final designs for the cd cover for my buddy travis - i tried to make something that would catch your attention but be simple enough to not distract you from actually listening to the cd... when i heard the title 'summer diaries' it made me think of painting the colors of summer. i guess subconsciously i incorporated my favorite quote "music is color painted on a background of silence' or i suppose white in this case... weird how i didn't even think of that the entire time i worked on it until just now. my inner id. tender.

24.5.08

magic

i have been trying to figure out a couple of cool commercials that i saw on mtv and kinda stumbled upon a crude patronus spell from harry potter

(they used soft body animation in maya and exported those into houdini for the ribbon trails and then exported that into rex... with various ripple/displacement maps) - i used after effects.

van hoff guitar painting

this is an idea for a cd cover that i was working on for a little for travis

22.5.08

eric's big bite

i was watching the food network admiring all of the after effects ever so present in all of their shows. seriously. every. single. show. i felt inspired to make myself a little logo that would appear in the corner of the screen to let the viewer know that yes, the local listings are what they say they are. i especially like all the fun luma mattes in guy's big bite - but thought the show would be cooler if it was eric's big bite... catchy, no es cierto?

21.5.08

el eric

i heretofore dub the windstorm in the local provo,ut area at and around 2:00am on the 21st of may as 'el eric'
